This is why people commonly complained that at launch, Diablo III wasn't an ARPG and was simply Auction House Titan. And if you can buy any item you want at any time, you've made a core part of the gameplay loop obsolete. If you allow the entire player base to trade amongst itself like with the D3 AH, all randomness in the game is reduced to zero because you can buy any conceivable item on the AH at any time. This ensures that you still only have a small fraction of all conceivable loot available to you at any time. For example, loot is tradable only among players in the same party. There are workaround which can be viable which require greatly reducing the number of players who can trade amongst one another. If you're interested, a PhD at Riot Games (a person who has thought about game design a lot more than people on this forum have) gave a GDC presentation on this problem (among others) a few years ago: Players no longer care about getting gear they actually want to use (what is supposed to be a core aspect of loot-based games), and instead just care that they get ANY loot which is worth enough to buy what they actually want from someone else. However, when you have a system to facilitate game-wide trading of items between the whole player base (ie loot is fungible), then all loot simply turns into gold (or whatever currency the game uses). The enjoyment of loot-based games is that each player has a varied loot drop experience.
